In Doaba, Akalis a distant second, but no sign of AAP thumbnail
JALANDHAR: Congress had a clear majority in the zila parishad and panchayat elections in Doaba region too on Saturday. Unlike Malwa, where the defeat margin was narrow, the SAD was a distant second in most of Doaba.

In Jalandhar district, of the 21zila parishad seats, Congress won 20 and an independent won one, as SAD failed to get any. Of the total 191 panchayat samiti zones, Congress won 132, SAD won 34, and independents won 25. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) did not get any seat.

In Hoshiarpur district also, SAD was trounced badly. Out of total 211 panchayat samiti zones, results of 175 were declared and the Congress bagged 129 of these while SAD and BJP could get 17 and 20 seats, respectively. One independent also won. Of the total 25 zila parishad seats results of eight were declared and all were won by Congress.

In Nawanshahr district, out of total 89 panchayat samiti, results were declared for 85 zones by late night and the Congress won 61, while SAD got 14, eight winners were independents. Out of total 10 zila parishad seats, results of seven were declared and the Congress won five, SAD got just one seat and one was bagged by an independent.

In Kapurthala district, all 17 panchayat samiti zones went to Congress.
