The neighbourhood, which knew her for decades, stood in silence as they watched the woman hanging from the main frame of the collapsible gate of her door. A gamochha (towel) was tied around her neck as her lifeless body hanged from the door frame. Till Sunday evening locals tried to come to terms with such a tragic end of the woman, who was widowed at an early age and raised her kids alone.
“Her sons worked outside Bengal, but they took care of her. For the past few years, she was suffering from hearing loss. We had to write down messages on papers to communicate with her. She had to depend on us for bank-related work. It seems that she could not bear the pain of being a deaf person,” said Biswanath Das, brother-in-law of Moitra.
Her sister Kajal Das, who stays on the third floor of the apartment, was going outside around 6.30am to buy some groceries. “I noticed my sister hanging from the frame of the collapsible gate. For a moment I stood dumbfounded and could not believe what I saw. The gate of the apartment was locked from inside and didi’s door was kept ajar,” she said.
