'Road map for e-vehicles after talks with auto cos'

NEW DELHI: Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Friday said that the government will announce the road map for electrical mobility after consulting the car trade, which has been opposing the recommendation of an inter-ministerial panel.

The panel has sought to permit sale of only electrical two-wheelers (with engine capability as much as 150cc) and electrical three-wheelers from 2025.

Speaking to newshounds at the sidelines of a CII tournament, Gadkari said, "The government does not want to shut any industry, but wants to help them. We want to connect private sector in all our projects to increase our growth rate. However, some changes will be needed... to reduce pollution... in view of national interest." He added that some within the trade would need to make some changes and the government is assessing those necessities. The minister confident the trade leaders that any resolution within the topic shall be taken only after consulting them. Sources said the consultation process would start soon.

NewsTread on May 23 had first reported NITI Aayog-led panel's recommendation to mandate sale of only electrical three-wheelers from April 2023 and electrical bikes from April 2025. The automobile trade has been not easy that the transition shouldn't be pressured. Urging the trade to sign up for hands in bringing leading edge tactics of financing, Gadkari said there was no "trust deficit" between trade and the government.
