Litchi is not the culprit, says Muzaffarpur pediatrician

The thriller fever in Muzzafarpur has killed nearly 100 youngsters in the past one month and litchi is being blamed for the outbreak of brain fever. Naturally so, advisories have been rolled out with regards to the intake of litchi and many of us are staying clear of it because they fear bad consequences.
We spoke exclusively to Muzaffarpur-based pediatrician Dr Arun Shah in regards to the crisis. He has been retaining a detailed eye on the infamous Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) for the previous 20 years.

Talking in regards to the 2016 research which used to be performed by means of renowned pediatrician and epidemiologist Jacob John into the AES, Dr Shah shares, “Everyone is comfortably blaming litchis and misinterpreting the findings of the find out about that used to be executed. People must know that the true wrongdoer is malnutrition and not litchi. If you take a look at the profile of children who've succumbed to the brain fever or who're reporting symptoms, you’d know all of them belong to the poorest of poor households and roam across the litchi orchards in this horrible heat wave the entire day eating no matter they are able to in finding, unripe, raw or rotten litchis. They return home and sleep empty abdomen, and get up in the morning reporting critical AES symptoms.” The physician additionally points out that if litchi alone is to be blamed for the deaths, then how come there are not any demise instances in the city Muzaffarpur.

To put it clearly, the member of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics provides, litchi contains a toxin called MCPG, which can result in drop in the sugar ranges of malnourished children (called hypoglycemia), and that is why if a healthy child eats litchi, he'll not suffer from AES. So litchi is just a triggering factor and not a reason in itself.

Dr Shah wants all oldsters from that space to verify they make their youngsters consume dinner before they move to mattress each and every night time. Also, he feels youngsters will have to not be allowed to visit the orchards. Moreover, the kid will have to be rushed to the clinic in an instant after the onset of symptoms. Not many of us realise, prolong in treatment makes most instances fatal. “I need all docs to in an instant start empirical treatment once the kid is dropped at the clinic. They will have to continue the investigation however will have to not prolong treatment.”

Other than litchis, insecticides and the virus that spreads via bats also are other triggers. “But I insist, litchi alone is the not the causal factor of AES, it is just a triggering factor.”

Also, we need to remember that AES isn't a illness however a syndrome which comes underneath not only hypoglycemia but also Japanese encephalitis, meningitis, malaria, typhoid and other illnesses. The commonplace symptoms are unexpected onset of very high fever, lack of awareness and convulsions.

It is imperative that authorities do not put the blame on litchis - it is time they consider the poor litchi farmers!
