FIH Series Finals: India maul hapless Russia 10-0 in opener


BHUBANESWAR: Favourites India demolished hapless Russia 10-Zero in their opening fit of the FIH Series Finals hockey tournament to start their 2020 Olympics qualification campaign on a rousing word on Thursday.

Drag-flicker Harmanpreet Singh (32nd, 48th) and striker Akashdeep Singh (41st, 55th minutes) scored a brace each for India, whilst Nilkanata Sharma (13th), Simranjeet Singh (19th), Amit Rohidas (20th), Varun Kumar (33rd), Gursahibjit Singh (38th) and Vivek Sagar Prasad (45th) were the opposite goal-getters for the home crew in the lop-sided Pool A stumble upon.


India will play Poland in their 2nd pool fit on Friday.

Chief coach Graham Reid mentioned he was once pleased with the Indian crew's performance but not satisfied.


"I am happy with our performance today but we can do much better. We would have liked to score more goals in the first two quarters. A coach can never be satisfied," the Australian mentioned after the fit.


"It is difficult to judge performance against a team like Russia," he added.


India captain Manpreet Singh agreed along with his coach.


"We got a lot of scoring chances and our finishing too was very good. But we need to avail more of the chances that come our way," he mentioned.
