Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena extends emergency by month


Sri Lankan Prez Maithripala Sirisena issued a special gazette notification extending the state of emergency by means of a month, citing "public security". The emergency law gives police and the army extensive powers to arrest, interrogate suspects with out court docket orders. Sri Lanka first of all imposed the emergency on April 23 to crack down on those excited about Easter bombings.
