Sports dept's food tender raises eyebrows

By Y Maheswara Reddy

A brief-term gentle to ensure a nutritious diet for state’s rising athletes is raising eyebrows; and so are its dates

Nutrition is going a ways in making ready our athletes for a sports tournament. But the style during which a young is being awarded to provide a nutritious diet for budding athletes (there are just about 4,000 of them dwelling in 30 sports hostels in Karnataka) has left a foul style in the mouth.

At the guts of the issue is the daily amount spent on young athletes dwelling in those hostels -- the federal government currently spends Rs 200 on food for senior scholars and Rs 175 on junior ones; however, there's a proposal to hike it to Rs 275 per pupil.

While the State govt is sitting at the proposal through the Youth Empowerment and Sports Department to extend the food finances for the Sports hostel inmates, the Department has determined to waft non permanent tenders inviting bidders to provide food to the students for three months starting from June 2019. (Eyebrows are also being raised at the timelines — the gentle is to be completed through May 18, days before the LS results on May 23. There are rumours that the incumbent govt might face headwinds after that date).

A warden at a sports hostel said, “It has change into difficult for us to offer food for the students because the budget allotted through the dep. are hardly enough to procure groceries. We will be able to provide the advisable diet if the government increase the amount per pupil to Rs 250. Last 12 months, the government had increased the finances from Rs 175 to Rs 200 per pupil.’’

The gentle process is predicted to be completed through May 18. For 3 months, each and every of the hostels has been allotted a budget of Rs 24,18,750.

There are round 30 sports hostels in Karnataka maintained through the Youth Empowerment and Sports Department. Each hostel has about 120 to 130 inmates. These hostels are situated in all district headquarters for the good thing about scholars who need to specialize in the game of their selection while continuing their education. Each of the hostels has a kitchen and the entire food supplied is similar across the entire hostels. While floating tenders, the Department has specified a list of all that needs to be supplied to the inmates, with a break-up of the daily menu.

Daily menu

Each day’s menu is other with directions that greens in the curry should now not be repeated; green leafy greens should be included in the menu at least two times every week; seasonal end result should be supplied and lemon juice should now not be given as an alternative.

This is a pattern of at some point’s menu. A pitcher of seasonal fruit juice and a fistful of dry end result (four cashews, five raisins, 3 dates and 4 almonds) to start out the day.

Breakfast contains five to 6 dosas with vegetable sagu, groundnut chutney, two eggs, and milk with sugar between eight.30 am and 10 am. The lunch menu has six to 8 wheat/jowar rotis, limitless brown/white rice, kohlrabi (knol khol) sambar, bottle gourd palya, recent vegetable green salad and curd. At round 3.30 pm, the inmates are given 200 ml of seasonal fruit juice and one cup of unpolluted fruit with honey. Around 6.30 pm, the students get a chocolate milk shake and one cup of green gram sprouts. Dinner accommodates six to 8 chapatis, brown/white rice, rooster or paneer curry, curd and salad and a cup of milk with sugar. Sunday evening dinner contains mutton biryani or paneer biryani.

We spend Rs 200 on each and every pupil. We have sent a proposal to extend the amount to Rs 275 per pupil. We are but to receive the federal government’s nod for this

– Okay Srinivas, Commissioner, Dept of Youth Empowerment and Sports

The inmates of these hostels don't have any lawsuits. “We don't have any problems here. We are happy with the standard and quantity of food,’’ says Smaran Nayak, a pupil at a sports hostel at Sampangi Rama Nagar.

It’s taxpayers’ money

Some social activists believe the verdict to waft non permanent tenders as a waste of tax-payers’ money. “The government should have floated the gentle inviting bidders to provide food for an entire 12 months instead of floating a non permanent gentle for three months. This non permanent gentle signifies that the government must waft another gentle after 3 months once more. It will reason loss to the exchequer,’’ says Sai Datta, a social activist.

Bhaskar (title modified), an activist, has wondered the want to waft the gentle for three months. “I believe the Minister for Sports is not certain of the coalition govt’s survival. Higher government have informed me that floating a non permanent gentle used to be the Sports minister’s idea.’’

However, Commissioner, Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Okay Srinivas has said that the dep. has sent a proposal to the federal government seeking extra budget for the maintenance of the sports hostels. “As of now, we are spending Rs 200 on each and every pupil. We have sent a proposal to extend the amount to Rs 275 per pupil. We hope to get the federal government’s nod in two to 3 months. After that, we will be able to waft another set of tenders inviting the bidders to provide food to the students,’’ says Okay Srinivas.

Minister for Youth Empowerment and Sports, Raheem Khan, used to be now not available for remark. His workplace said that the minister used to be busy canvassing for the Congress candidate contesting in the bypoll for Chincholi assembly seat.
