Federer saves two match points to beat Monfils in Madrid


MADRID: Roger Federer survived two fit issues against French maverick Gael Monfils to increase his claycourt comeback and achieve the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open on Thursday.

The evergreen Swiss 37-year-old did not drop a recreation in a dominant first set but was dragged into an intense fight by means of an inspired Monfils prior to prevailing 6-Zero, Four-6, 7-6(3).
