Theni: I-T raids AMMK ofc, seizes Rs 1.48cr cash

CHENNAI: The Income tax department raided AMMK (Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam) administrative center at Andipatti in Theni district on Tuesday. The searches started around 9.30pm on Tuesday and ended at five.30am on Wednesday, based on information about money being stored within the higher flooring of an AMMK administrative center.

"Unaccounted cash worth Rs 1.48 crore has been seized. The cash was neatly packed in 94 packets/envelops on which the ward number, number of voters and the amount - Rs 300 per voter - were written. All these wards are within Andipatti assembly segment which is going to bypoll tomorrow," said a senior I-T investigation authentic.

The premises belong to a functionary of AMMK birthday celebration. The AMMK birthday celebration administrative center is functioning on the floor ground.

"The sworn statement of the person present on the premises was recorded. He stated that Rs 2 crore in cash was brought in for distribution among voters in Andipatti panchayat union area on April 16," said the authentic.

Initially, a gaggle of birthday celebration staff overpowered the flying squad standing guard outside the premises, broke open the door and snatched some cash packets. Police needed to open fireplace within the air. Dropping some packets, the miscreants fled with a few cash packets.

"All the remaining cash in 94 bundles (Rs 1.48 crore) was seized along with the envelopes. A postal ballot paper for Andipatti assembly by-election which was already marked for AMMK candidate was also found on the premises and was seized," said the authentic.

The district collector and SP reached the spot and supervised the protection. The district police have filed an FIR in opposition to plenty of individuals.
