Mahagenco yet to install equipment to cut SO2 emission

Nagpur: Even regardless that the ministry of environment, forests and climate alternate (MoEFCC) had made installation of flue-gas desulphurizers (FGDs) obligatory for 3 660MW gadgets or Mahagenco’s Koradi energy plant, the technology company is yet to put in them. FGDs cut back quantity of sulphur dioxide (SO2) in the plant emission and thus prevent acid rain.
Mahagenco had additionally confident National Green Tribunal (NGT) that it might set up FGDs in Koradi. It had floated expression of pastime (EoI) for FGD on one unit however later deserted the challenge.

Even as Mahagenco isn't installing pollution control equipment for the three present gadgets, the state govt has cleared its proposal to put in two extra 660MW gadgets on the plant. According to native BJP leaders, new gadgets use super-critical generation, which does not reason pollution.

In July, 2016, Mahagenco had sought time from MoEFCC, to defer the installation of FGDs till December, 2017. Its request was once granted. However, over 16 months have handed because the expiry of the cut-off date and it is nonetheless ‘finding out’ the problem.

Mahagenco is reluctant to put in FGDs because they value over Rs400 crore and will building up value of technology. The company officials are, then again, now not stricken about effects of pollution in the house around Koradi.

A senior Mahagenco professional, commenting on the FGDs, said, “Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) had measured SO2 emission ranges in the house around Koradi. It was once discovered to be inside of stipulated limits. You have to use limestone and gypsum in FGDs they usually devour lot of water. In fact FGDs themselves reason pollution. They were installed in Vindhyachal energy station of National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and have been useless.”

The professional additional said that research was once happening using other equipments to scale back SO2 emissions. “The committee will learn about them and make a choice the most productive resolution,” he added.

Sunil Dahiya, blank air campaigner of NGO Greenpeace, slammed Mahagenco for its delaying techniques. “When the corporate knows that it has to put in FGDs, losing any further time will most effective reason well being hazards for the people residing within reach. It must additionally now not set up any further gadgets as the rustic already has surplus coal-fired thermal capability and losing public cash on new gadgets doesn’t make sense. These gadgets harm the environment and endanger the well being of voters,” he said.
