LS polls: Bengal to get special observer from Bihar

KOLKATA: The Election Commission on Tuesday appointed former Bihar leader electoral officer (CEO) Ajay V Nayak as special observer for Bengal. The 1984-batch IAS officer who retired ultimate yr is predicted to succeed in the state on Friday and oversee the ultimate five phases of polls. The EC has already appointed Vivek Dubey as a distinct police observer for Bengal. Nayak is predicted to report back to the EC daily, sources said.

The appointment comes after the state BJP leadership hurled allegations of partisanship in opposition to Bengal leader electoral officer Aariz Aftab. The ruling Trinamool Congress, too, has criticised the EC for what it has termed as "arbitrary and biased" transfers of senior police observers.

During the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, the EC had appointed every other former IAS officer from Bihar, Sudhir Kumar Rakesh, as a distinct observer for the state.
