LK Advani a father figure, deeply hurt by Rahul's words: Sushma Swaraj

NEW DELHI: A day after Rahul Gandhi attacked PM Narendra Modi for "humiliating" LK Advani, exterior affairs minister Sushma Swaraj said that the Congress president's words have hurt the birthday party and added that the veteran BJP chief is like a father figure".

"Rahulji - Advani ji is our father figure. Your words have hurt us deeply. Please try to handle some decorum of your speech," she tweeted, each in English in addition to Hindi.

On Friday, the Congress president, addressing a poll rally at Chandrapur close to Pune, had said, "BJP talks of Hinduism. In Hinduism, guru is ideal. It talks of guru-shishya custom. Who is Modi's guru? Advani. Joota maar ke degree se utara (Advani was once kicked out from degree)." Gandhi said Modi had humiliated Advani and added that disrespecting one's guru isn't Hindu culture.

Gandhi's remark was once a veiled reference to Advani not getting Lok Sabha poll ticket from Gandhinagar, from where BJP has fielded birthday party president Amit Shah as an alternative.

Earlier, the exterior affairs minister Sushma Swaraj slammed the Congress president and his circle of relatives and said they must renounce their SPG safety if they feel that terror isn't an issue in India.

"Rahul Gandhi says that terror isn't an issue in the nation. I need to ask him if terror isn't the problem, why you are taking SPG safety. All the (Gandhi) circle of relatives is having SPG safety. If terror isn't the problem for you, then you definately write and provides to the government that you just don't want SPG safety," Swaraj said while addressing a gathering right here.

"In 2008, greatest terror attack took place in Mumbai during which 166 other people died. But the earlier govt has not taken any step. When terror attacks took place in Uri and Pulwama, Narendra Modi took the step to habits air strike," she added.
