UN: Adopt less meat-intensive diet to save Earth’s depleting resources

The report also flagged how 33% of the worldwide safe to eat food is currently wasted with 56% of it being wasted by advanced countries.

Innovative solutions for environmental challenges and sustainable consumption and production have been the twin topics of the fiveday meeting.


“While the current scale and pace of motion is not sufficient to succeed in sustainability, it is still possible for us to radically reorganise the best way we produce, eat and invest,” stated Niklas Hagelberg, climate specialist with UN Environment.


Referring to the UN Environment’s Emission Gap Report of 2018, Hagelberg noted that food techniques from production to consumption have the possible to mitigate up to 6.7 gigatonnes of CO2 similar, which is second best to the power sector.


“We desire a global food transformation in the subsequent 12 years in which food waste is halved and diets and well being are advanced through decreased animal protein intake. We also want to incentivise climate-smart and sustainable agriculture and finish the current unjust food situation in which over 820 million persons are undernourished,” stated Hagelberg.
