Omar furor reflects intensifying national debate over Israel


NEW YORK: The allegations of anti-Semitism directed toward Ilhan Omar have no precedent in Congress. Yet on college campuses, in state legislatures and in many different venues national, the polarized debate about Israel is a familiar warfare and likely to accentuate.


Criticism of Israeli policies toward the Palestinians has grown in quantity and scope, with power calls for boycotts and disinvestment. The movement has been fueled by means of a wave of youthful activists, together with many Jews aligning with Muslims.


Pro-Israel organizations and politicians have countered with tricky responses. Efforts to reconcile the differences have gained little traction.


Congress has never skilled this type of furor involving a Muslim member accused of anti-Semitism. Divided Democrats sooner or later drafted a solution that condemned quite a lot of bigotry and did not mention Omar by means of title.
