Kolkata: Extortion cuffs on civic volunteers

KOLKATA: Three civic volunteers had been arrested, and subsequently suspended, on charges of extortion after the trio allegedly demanded money from fish buyers on Friday. Baguiati police have initiated a case.

Around 4am, when Sukumar Rajbangshi of Pashchimpara and 5 different fish buyers had been heading towards Khoribari in Rajarhat to gather fish, the civic volunteers stopped their car and allegedly demanded money. On being refused, the civic police officers allegedly abused the buyers and assaulted the driver, Nur Islam Khan.

Rajbansghi got off the car and a controversy followed, all over which he, too, was assaulted and sustained a head injury. The accused — recognized as Raju Ghosh, Rajib Chowdhury and Avisek Mondal — allegedly accumulated Rs 20,000 from the buyers ahead of leaving the spot.

By this time, different fish buyers stopped their vehicles on seeing the ruckus. According to the police complaint that was later lodged, the accused had been drunk and considered one of them demanded that he be given a lift within the car.

“The three weren't on duty. They were suspended and arrested,” mentioned a source.

The accused were booked below IPC sections 341, 323, 325, 379 and 34.
