Residents block road to protest against waste yard


Dharwad: Hundreds of citizens from Laxmi Nagar, Hosayellapur and surrounding areas below the banner of Laxminagar Nagarika Hitarakshana Sangha took out a rally and blocked the Hubballi-Dharwad street for greater than an hour on Friday.

They had been protesting the apathy of civic authorities in addressing their long-pending issues, maximum of them involved to health and hygiene. The protesters’ major grouse is that amidst stiff opposition from citizens right here, HDMC set up a waste disposal unit in Hosayellapur near the crematorium. Every day, not anything lower than 100 metric tonnes of waste accumulated from various wards in the town is dumped right here. Foul smell emanating from the dumping yard is inflicting air pollution and affecting the health of folks, they charged.


The citizens collected near Suvarna petrol bunk and sat on a protest by way of blockading the Hubballi-Dharwad street. Even, the BRTS corridor was once blocked inflicting huge site visitors jam for a while.


On getting knowledge, police rushed to the spot to pacify the agitators. The citizens had been in no mood to withdraw their protest until the HDMC commissioner gave them an assurance in writing. The protest was once withdrawn after HDMC mentioned the issue can be solved inside a couple of days.
