Quake hits Bay of Bengal, tremors felt in Chennai

CHENNAI: An earthquake measuring five.four magnitude at the Richter scale hit the Bay of Bengal region around 7.02am, in keeping with Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System monitored via INCOIS, Hyderabad. But no tsunami risk exists to India.

The earthquake hit about 606km off Chennai coast with the epicentre at a intensity of 10km in the sea. Parts of Chennai felt tremors. No casualty or injury to assets used to be reported.

“Based on historic earthquake and tsunami data, tsunami risk does now not exist for the Indian Ocean. IOTWMS-TSP India will track sea level gauges almost about epicentre and document if any tsunami task is seen,” the system alert stated.
