Polls for bar council committee to be held in March

CHANDIGARH: The long stay up for issuing formal notification for election of chairman and other place of work bearers of bar council of Punjab and Haryana is over after the state election tribunal of the bar council disposed of all of the complaints and disputes relating to elections. Polls to elect chairman and vp of the council, together with other executive members, would happen in the first week of March.

The Supreme Court on January 22 had dominated that the state bar election tribunal would care for election disputes and no longer the Bar Council of India election tribunal. Accordingly, the state bar election tribunal of bar council of Punjab and Haryana comprising of three members disposed of all election complainants until February 2 following which the notification for elected 25 members was once issued. Within 15 days, election for sending one member to Bar Council of India would happen on February 21.

The vote casting happened on November 1 and 2 and ultimate result of 25 elected members of Punjab and Haryana bar council was once declared on December 12. After the effects were out, a notification of the elected members was once to be issued. Later, a date was once to be fastened for the election of chairman, secretary of the bar council. Meanwhile, Bar Council of India made three-member election tribunal which was once given powers to decide on all of the election-related complaints and disputes which earlier used to get resolved at state-level election tribunal.

This tribunal was once challenged through Advocate Partap Singh and 17 other advocates in Supreme Court who argued that Bar Council of India’s transfer to formulate election tribunal was once to delay the election process so that previous members may just remain place of work bearers for longer time. On January 22, Supreme Court dominated in favour of 17 advocates and directed that Bar Council of India’s election tribunal has no jurisdiction below as per Section 34 of bar council of Punjab and Haryana . Supreme Court additionally dominated that state-level bar election tribunal would care for all complaints and disputes relating to 25 elected members and in addition directed that this tribunal has to decide all of the complaints inside of 10 days.

There are 25 posts for which the elections happened, and the term for the posts are 5 years. These 25 members, together with advocate normal of Punjab and Haryana, would vote to elect executive members of the bar council.
