Odisha: Keonjhar villagers seek damages

KEONJHAR: Villagers of Khadibil gheraoed the place of job of Krushna Chandra Das, sub-divisional scientific officer (Anandpur), on Monday to hunt reimbursement for the woman who had the mistaken leg operated upon at Anandpur subdivisional health facility, about 70km from here, on Friday. The protesters sought motion in opposition to the negligent staff and submitted a memorandum to the officer.

Mitarani Jena, 24, a local of Khadibil, said she had gone to regard a wound in her left leg. After a check-up, a physician sent her to a dressing room-cum minor operation theatre. A health facility staff member administered her anaesthesia. “When I regained consciousness, I discovered that the surgical procedure had been achieved on my right leg. I cried in panic. My husband complained to the doctor,” she said.

Her husband Trilochan Jena, a farmer, said the doctor additionally operated on the left leg after the complaint and discharged her from the health facility. “My spouse can slightly walk now,” he added.

S S Bal, additional district scientific officer, said a colleague of his had been sent to the house of the woman on the orders of the district management. “He has carried out a probe and will submit a report to the manager district scientific officer and the collector (Keonjhar),” he said. “The lady had wounds on both her feet however she went for remedy of her left leg. While dressing the wound, the scientific staff could not gauge which foot to operate upon,” he added.

Chief district scientific officer C S Mishra said, “We will take motion in opposition to errant staff after going during the document.”
