Number of surgeries goes up across departments

The provision of more crucial care products and services and addition of super specialty departments and beds have ended in the increase in number of primary and minor surgical procedures within the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, say officers. More than a century after it used to be commissioned, the hospital opened its cardiology division and began acting open middle surgical procedures in mid-2017. In early 2018, it performed vascular surgical procedures and complicated gastroenterology surgical procedures.

The remaining two years has observed CMCH ramp up its cardiology facilities. “We started upgrading the dep. in mid-2017, and began obtaining facilities like more operation theatre, full-fledged cardio thoracic surgeons, cath labs and kit to do angiograms and angioplasties,” dean of the hospital Dr B Ashokan said.

“We started acting open middle surgical procedures, like bypass surgical procedures in mid-2017. As of December 2018, we now have performed 83 open middle surgical procedures or primary surgical procedures,” he said. “Averaging 5 a month,” he added.

The vascular surgical operation division started in 2018 performed 18 primary surgical procedures remaining year. “This comprises remedy for varicose veins, growing A-V fistula surgical procedures for patients requiring hemodialysis, remedy for artherosclerosis or narrowing of arteries because of plaque buildup along artery partitions,” said the dean. The surgical gastroenterology division which used to principally take care of appendicitis, hysterectomy among different simple surgical procedures, has now begun running all pancreatic tumours, acting laparascopic surgical procedures, liver surgical procedures and complicated appendicitis surgical procedures,” he added.

While 3 primary surgical procedures were performed in surgical gastroenterology in March 2017, the number rose to 26 in March 2018.

Besides this, there's a spike in surgical procedures performed across departments like neurology, cosmetic surgery, orthopedics and ENT. In orthopedics, the number of primary surgical procedures performed in 2018 used to be 1,700 more than the former year, head of the dep. Dr Vetrivelchezhian said. “Every month should you evaluate, we now have performed 130 to 200 surgical procedures more than remaining year,” he said.
