Long detour: Mithakhali underpass closed for six months

AHMEDABAD: The Mithakali underpass, connecting Mithakhali Circle and Ashram Road, will be closed for traffic for the next six months because of construction of a new bridge. The underpass runs underneath the Ahmedabad-Botad line, which is now being transformed to extensive gauge from metre gauge.

A notification issued by means of city police commissioner A K Singh states that the underpass will be closed from February 3 to August 3.

Railway officers said the Railway Development Corporation is changing the track on the entire line. As a part of this, the underpass can be redesigned. Due to the conversion, the bridge will need strengthening. The bridge, which was previous on girders, will now be replaced with a cement concrete bridge.

Railway officers said the AMC will simultaneously absorb augmentation of the drainage network. The underpass gets closed for traffic even with the slightest shower, as it briefly gets flooded

The underpass will thus not be operational for almost six months. Commuters can use other ways just like the Navrangpura stage crossing, the Mithakhali village stage railway crossing and the flyover between Ellis Bridge and Gujarat College and Butasingh Mahadev Temple Crossroads. Railways authorities said the Madalpur underpass was first taken up for strengthening and now it is Mithakali underpass’s turn. The work was taken up in stages so that commuters do not face an excessive amount of hassle.
