Gun on campus? Probe concludes it was a toy pistol

Ludhiana: A day after a PAU scholar’s ‘gun’ act caused moderately an uproar on the campus, a police probe has concluded that the 21-year previous hosteller had only used an air gun.
In a video clip, a PAU scholar was observed firing within the air on the campus. As the student had used a cracker explosive whilst firing, it had made law enforcement officials consider that it was no longer an actual gun.

But the probe has found that the student purchased the toy pistol from a gun area close to Nirankari Bhawan in Bharat Nagar Chowk for Rs 2,000.

Meanwhile, alarmed over the expanding use of air gun and toy pistols in crimes, the town police are proposing to prohibit sale of such toys within the city.

Assistant commissioner of police (West) Gurpreet Singh said, “We have verified the matter and known that the PAU scholar has used an air gun. This gun is principally used to practise capturing. He had bought it from a gun area in Bharat Nagar chowk for Rs 2,000. The police have additionally inquired from the landlord of the gun area to verify if the air gun was bought from his shop. The police have recovered the air gun and released the student.”

On Wednesday, the PAU police had rounded up undergraduate scholar Khushpreet Singh for questioning. He was released after questioning.

Cops said as of now, there is not any restriction on purchasing air gun or toy pistols, which can be available for Rs 800 to Rs 2000. Senior police officers, in the meantime, said in a bid to keep away from misuse of such toys within the crimes, they're drawing modalities to prohibit their sale.

“These days, miscreants have began the use of air gun and toy pistols to execute crimes, together with snatchings and robberies. The problem is that no one can easily differentiate between the true gun and a toy pistol,” said the ACP.

“We are occupied with its open and easy sale. Therefore, we've discussed the matter with the district lawyer (criminal) to determine if a suggestion can be sent to the federal government to prohibit sale of those toy weapons. Ludhiana police will indubitably take up the matter with the federal government,” added the ACP.
