Even erring police personnel can’t escape traffic sentinels


PANAJI: Goa police is strongly backing the implementation of Traffic Sentinel scheme, regardless of they themselves being not able to flee it.

The Traffic Cell has issued challans under the scheme to its own police officers who've been flouting rules.


Goa police cars are registered in the name of the director normal of police (DGP). Traffic sentinels have caught police officers driving police bikes with out helmets and feature reported those violations to the site visitors mobile under the Traffic Sentinel scheme. The mobile later generated notices to the DGP.

Speaking to TOI, DGP Muktesh Chander said that, “I've gained notices for police officers driving police bikes with out helmet. These erring police staff have been recognized, and were directed to pay the challan,” he said.

“I've strictly warned the police staff that strict motion shall be initiated if they're found violating site visitors rules whilst on accountability,” Chander said.

The police have said there has been an important dip in deaths because of fatal accidents in the state after enforcing the Traffic Sentinel scheme. Statistics published that for each and every 30 hours, one demise was reported in a road twist of fate, and the maximum number of people that died in such accidents were both two-wheeler or pillion riders.

5,834 site visitors sentinels enrol in scheme

On November 10, 2017 Chander had introduced the Traffic sentinel scheme, a platform on WhatsApp in which voters could file site visitors violations in the state to the site visitors mobile and become profitable rewards.

Recently, Goa police introduced the site visitors sentinel app, and over 5,834 site visitors sentinels have been enrolled.

Traffic police booked have 71,162 instances and notices generated over 2 lakh because the inception of the scheme.


Based on the kind of violation, the person accumulates issues. For example, reporting an example of triple-seat driving on a two-wheeler will earn them 10 issues, whilst parking on footpaths or zebra crossings will accrue three issues. On gathering 100 issues, the person can claim a praise of Rs 1,000.


While MLAs reducing across the celebration strains have demanded scrapping of the scheme in the state, Bureau of police analysis and development (DG BPR&D) , which comes under the union ministry of house affairs, has stressed that this scheme will have to be implemented at the national degree.


During the recent-concluded meeting consultation, legislators demanded that the scheme will have to be scrapped, or else it could create legislation and order problem.


People have been booked for assaulting site visitors sentinels for clicking pictures and reporting site visitors violations.
