Driving without seat belt will lead to suspension of licence: Raghubar Das

RANCHI: Chief minister Raghubar Das on Saturday said licence of auto drivers, who had been caught with out their seat belts 3 times, would be cancelled. He said the federal government is working at the modalities for the licence cancellation.

Das made the announcement while addressing the ‘Run for Safety’ programme organised at the penultimate day of the 30th National Road Safety Week 2019 at Sainik Market. Addressing the gathering, the chief minister said, “Disregard for road safety rules is one of the greatest causes for accidents. Over the years, this forget has changed into an enormous risk. While road safety week programmes like these are meant to sensitise the general public for greater good, efficient implementation of the rules may be had to deliver the violators to ebook. We are soon going to be harsh on such drivers via bringing in contemporary rules.”

Notably, a few years again, similar measures had been reportedly introduced by which someone caught violating visitors rules 3 times will have to face cancellation of their licence. But it couldn’t be applied in letter and spirit owing to lack of right kind data.

Talking to TOI, state transport commissioner Praveeen Toppo said the supply of licence cancellation already exists in the Motor Vehicles’ Act, however they are soon going to ship contemporary orders on this regard.

“About 12 road accidents are reported on a daily basis, out of which primary casualty happens as a result of helmet much less riding. So to curb it, we are in the process of sending contemporary orders to all districts to put in force rules relating to suspension adopted via termination of the licences,” he said over the telephone.

District transport officer Sanjiv Kumar said for every notified offence, there's a provision for suspension of license for 3 months. If it's suspended 3 times, then the license will get terminated.

He added, “Earlier, we didn’t have online licence and challan (fantastic) generation machine as a result of which the rule of thumb couldn’t be enforced. Now that the guide process has become a passé, we will put in force the rule of thumb properly soon after govt issues contemporary directives.”
