Don’t intervene in triple talaq law just for votes, Muslim scholars to Rahul Gandhi


AGRA: A day after the Congress introduced it's going to scrap the triple talaq legislation if it was voted to energy in Lok Sabha polls, a group of Muslim intellectuals in Aligarh wrote to party chief Rahul Gandhi urging him not to intervene or scrap this legislation for votes.

In a letter to Rahul Gandhi, Islamic scholar and national president of Bhartiya Samaj Sevak Sangathan (BSSS), Chaudhary Ifrahim Hussain, mentioned, "If you are really concerned about the welfare of Muslim community then implement the recommendations of the Sachar committee, restore the minority character of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), give equal rights to Muslims that were deprived by the Congress party and remove the religious ban on Dalit-Muslim reservation."

He mentioned that Congress party will not get the reinforce of the community just by pronouncing its intent to scrap the triple talaq legislation. "This bill was passed to end Talaq-e-biddat or instant triple talaq on the directions of the apex court with the suggestions of ulema (a body of Muslim scholars who are recognized as having specialised knowledge of Islamic sacred law and theology)," he mentioned, adding that this was required to finish this crime.


Talking to TOI, Hussain mentioned, that punishment is needed for fighting any crime and triple talaq should be regarded as as a crime. This legislation isn't against the community, in truth it provides justice to ladies. The punishment is for those, who devote the crime. He mentioned, he isn't supporting any chief, however appreciates the step taken by the government in favour of women.


"If the Congress party really wants to make some law for our community then they should provide freedom to Indian Muslims to adopt the laws like Saudi Arabia which is based on Quran," he mentioned, adding that this will be the real sympathy for the community.


On Thursday, talking at the AICC minority division national conference in Delhi, where Congress chief Rahul Gandhi was also present, MP Sushmita Dev had mentioned, "The Congress party stood up and opposed it (triple talaq bill) in Parliament. I promise you people that the Congress government will come in 2019 and scrap this law. But it is also certain that whatever law is brought for women's empowerment, by whichever government, the Congress will support it."


The BJP govt had final month re-promulgated the ordinance banning the practice of rapid triple talaq, which draws a prison term of three years for the husband. While the ordinance makes it a "non-bailable" offence, an accused can manner a Justice of the Peace even prior to trial to hunt bail.
