B'luru: 142 tiger, leopard claws seized; 3 held

BENGALURU: RMC Yard police on Thursday seized 142 tiger and leopard claws and arrested 3 males possessing the contraband.
Acting on a tip-off, plainclothesmen zeroed in on the accused when they have been status at the flower marketplace in Yeshwantpur and recovered the claws they have been wearing in their luggage.

During interrogation, P Kavitkumar, 23, R Gopiraj alias Gopi, 25, and N Sanjay, 21, all residents of Shikaripura village, in Nagamangala, Mandya district, confessed that they have been in the town looking for attainable consumers for the claws.

“They claimed to have bought the claws from a poacher in Pakshirajapuram of Hunsur taluk. We will ship a group to nab the poacher,” stated police.

Police have contacted woodland officers to make sure the quality of the claws seized. “Many times, miscreants bring pretend claws and take a look at to sell them saying they're of tigers and leopards. Once woodland officers recognise whether or not those claws are original or no longer, we will decide the future plan of action,” stated RMC Yard police.

Police are also checking the antecedents of the accused trio. “We strongly suspect them to be skilled palms in dealing with such goods. Preliminary investigations revealed that a close relative of Kavitkumar used to be arrested in 2013 for illegally possessing ivory tusks. However, he used to be acquitted through the court due to loss of evidence,” stated investigating officers.
