AMC forgets to collect tax for 11 years

There is no dearth of instances of tax evasion. But ever heard of ‘tax assortment evasion’? Whatever the explanation be, the civic body is accountable of it, if an Ambawadi resident is to be believed. Sixty-year-old Deepika Akruwala has been ready to pay property tax for her apartment in Ambawadi, but she is but to get a invoice for it.

Ironically, even the former owner never got it. Akruwala’s anxiousness isn't misplaced. Properties get sealed if their taxes don't seem to be paid. “I wish to pay my property tax, but no one from Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has visited me even once to assess my apartment despite my complaint. It’s almost a year since I bought this space, but I do not even know what my tenement quantity or tax due is,” stated Akruwala.

It was once in March 2018 that she bought the apartment on the 10th flooring of Prasad Tower (registered as Binita Co. Op. Housing Society Ltd. in 2007). She realised that the former owner had never got property tax invoice, nor had AMC even sent an officer for evaluation of the apartment. While purchasing the property, she kept aside Rs 25,000 from the acquisition value to be paid as pending property tax dues of the former owner between 2007 and 2018.

Akruwala approached the civic body in April closing year for evaluation of her apartment. In her complaint on April four, she asked AMC to take the measurements of her space, in response to which the property tax quantity could be made up our minds and invoice generated. However, 10 months later, not anything has took place of it.

The previous occupant, Hiten Shah, stated he had been residing there since 2007. “Nobody from the municipal corporation ever came for evaluation, and never did we obtain any property tax invoice,” he stated. Interestingly, the opposite owners have been getting their expenses on time.

AMC authorities stunned

Debashish Banerjee, assessor and tax collector at AMC, gave the impression stunned at the delay in evaluation of the house. “The evaluation is done at the zonal stage by means of the deputy assessor and tax collector. Usually, it's finished inside a couple of months after the construction will get its Building Use (BU) permission,” he stated.

When Mirror enquired, a property tax official of AMC’s west zone admitted that Akruwala’s complaint was once pending since closing April and would be investigated soon. Deepak Patel, deputy assessor and tax collector, west zone, stated, “Only illegal structures don't seem to be measured and therefore do not get property tax expenses. For all felony homes which have their BU permission in position, we factor the expenses.” He stated it was once rare for a property to remain unmeasured.

“It most often takes us most of a month to get the measurements after an owner submits the applying to get the property measured,” he stated. An officer from the property tax department stated that after the method of dimension is over, Akruwala must pay the tax for all the duration starting 2007, but won't face any penalty. Meanwhile, Akruwala’s look forward to her property tax invoice continues.
