Alma mater invites Mevani, college cancels event


AHMEDABAD: The HK Arts and Commerce College on Ashram Road, affiliated with Gujarat University, cancelled its annual day function scheduled for Monday, after trustees gained protest calls against Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani being made the chief guest of the function. Mevani is an alumnus of the varsity. The trustees resolved to refuse get admission to to the auditorium, situated on the campus, as a result of which the development needed to be cancelled.
The choice came from the trustees of Gujarat Vidyasabha having eminent architect and 2018 Pritzker Architecture Prize winner B V Doshi as president and writer Padma Shri Kumarpal Desai as vice-president.

Trustees gained threats

Sources within the college mentioned that the protest calls have been made by means of positive BJP leaders in Gujarat University to the trustees. The leaders had threatened that they might disrupt the once a year function if the permission to the corridor was now not withdrawn.


Principal of the varsity, Hemantkumar Shah, informed TOI, “The match needed to be cancelled as a result of Jignesh, a former alumnus of our college, was invited as leader guest. Our trustees had gained protest calls from positive political sections in Gujarat University. They have been threatened that the development might be disrupted if Jignesh entered the campus. We have been stunned when the trustees refused permission to the corridor.”


The annual match was to take place on Monday to felicitate meritorious scholars, achievers from the NSS and the NCC, cultural actions and social products and services. Sources discussed that a number of the provide scholars and alumni had protested against the transfer and also warned of dire consequences if Mevani attended the development.
