Airport sees an increase in gold smuggling cases

Coimbatore: The town airport is being an increasing number of used to smuggle gold into the rustic from out of the country, especially the Gulf and Sri Lanka.
Sleuths hooked up to the regional unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have seized 46kg smuggled gold worth Rs 14.5 crore up to now this financial yr (from April 2018 to February 26, 2019). In the 2017-18 financial yr, they had seized 34kg gold worth Rs 10 crore and the yr prior to that 24 kg gold worth Rs 7.28 crore. “If the carriers are having gold worth more than Rs 1 crore, they're going to be arrested and despatched to jail. So, most of them are now sporting gold bars worth less than Rs1 crore from the Gulf or Sri Lanka to steer clear of prison,” said a senior DRI officer, who didn’t need to be named.

He said the regional unit of DRI has dependable sources, who tip them off gold smuggling instances. On February three, DRI sleuths had held Usman, of Malappuram, and Shajahan, of Palakkad, who have been smuggling gold to town from Sharjah by means of Air Arabia flight. They smuggled gold to town by means of concealing them of their rectum. DRI sleuths seized from more than 1kg crude gold worth Rs 46.78 lakh from the duo.

Sources said in some instances airline staff also aid the carriers smuggle gold bars.

On January 25, at the foundation of specific intelligence won that two airline staff have been facilitating gold smuggling by the use of receiving the contraband from the carrier arriving by means of SriLankan airways (UL 193) at the aerobridge and returning the same to the latter outside the airport, DRI sleuths stuck both the carrier and the airline staff and recovered 16 crude gold bars valued at Rs 55 lakh. Five other people - airline staff Manoj and Sathish, carrier Syed Abuthahir, his contact T Raja, of Trichy, and the driver - have been arrested in reference to the problem.
