Proposal to rename Bejai New Road after George Fernandes mooted

Mangaluru: A proposal to rename Bejai New Road within the city after former defence minister overdue George Fernandes has been mooted through civil society and an offer on this regard will probably be discussed within the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) council meet.
In reality, George Fernandes used to be born and brought up in Bejai, who later rose to turn into a national business union chief, statesman, socialist and Union minister. Born on June 3, 1930 to John Fernandes and Alice Fernandes, George used to be the eldest of the circle of relatives of six boys and used to be fondly called ‘Jerry.’

Considering his contributions to the country and being a son of Mangaluru, many of his lovers and civil society have demanded that the town company rename the Bejai New Road, a distinguished street abutting the Bejai Main Road within the city, after the chief, who died on January 29.

Social activist Nigel Albuquerque sharing the views on a social media platform, stated he has already spoken to Lancelot Pinto, the corporator of the ward where Bejai New Road is positioned. “I talked to Lancelot Pinto who has seconded the proposal to rename Bejai New Road as ‘Divangatha George Fernandes Road’. The proposal will probably be tabled within the upcoming MCC council for the solution to be passed,” Nigel stated.

Similarly, on-line campaigns are being performed through lovers of George Fernandes in Mangaluru to name the road after him.

Lancelot Pinto stated he has already put forth an time table searching for a solution from the Mangaluru City Corporation council on this regard. “I've put forth the time table of renaming the Bejai New Road after George Fernandes. I've proposed the time table and it's going to be arising within the subsequent council assembly. I've discussed within the proposal that George Fernandes is a resident of Bejai New Road and also requested the council to cross a solution to name the road after the chief. I've made this proposal since I am representing the ward, where the chief used to be born,” he added.
