Woman, daughter killed as bus catches fire in Barmer

Jaisalmer: A sleeper bus of Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) going from Jaipur to Barmer caught fire near Khed village in Balotara sub-division of Barmer district on Sunday morning. A woman and her daughter were charred to death in the accident while 13 others were rescued. As the woman did not want to leave her daughter behind, both were killed on the spot.

Total 15 passengers were in the bus. The bus driver and conductor showing courage rescued 13 passengers. The reason of fire is said to be short circuit. Police and administrative officers reached the spot and started the rescue operations.

The bus going from Jaipur to Barmer on Sunday morning suddenly caught fire near Khed village on state highway 28. Within a few minutes, the fire engulfed the entire bus. A woman and her daughter were charred to death. After an hour, three fire tenders reached the spot and controlled the fire. On getting information, the SDM, ASP and administrative officers reached the spot.

According to driver Bhawani Singh, around 5am, smoke started emanating from the sleeper bus and before passengers could understand anything the seats caught fire. Immediately, the bus was stopped and passengers were evacuated. Out of 15 passengers, 13 were rescued safely by the driver and conductor, Jaswant Kumar, but a woman and her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter were engulfed by fire.

Bhawani said efforts were made to rescue the woman but she did not want to leave her daughter. Her daughter was surrounded by fire from all sides. In the mean time, the diesel tank exploded. Bhawani escaped by jumping out of the bus but the woman and her daughter were charred to death.

According to police, Thawla (Nagaur district) residents, Kavya and her mother Rekha, wife of one Ajit Singh died on the spot.
